- Engine: Powered by the 6.8L Triton 2-Valve V10. It produces 310 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque, which is lower than the later 3-valve iterations.
- Transmission: Paired with the heavy-duty 4R100 4-speed automatic transmission featuring an Overdrive lockout switch on the shifter stalk, rather than the later 5-speed TorqShift system.
- Weight Classifications (GVWR): Commonly available in 15,700 lb, 18,000 lb, 20,500 lb, and 22,000 lb variants.
- Wheels & Tires: Lighter chassis variants typically use 19.5-inch wheels, while the heavier 20.5k and 22k GVWR packages utilize larger 22.5-inch wheels for improved load capacity.
- Brakes: Features a hydro-boost 4-wheel disc anti-lock braking system (ABS) driven by the power steering pump rather than a traditional vacuum booster.
- Engine Oil: Requires 6.0 quarts (5.7L) of SAE 5W-30 motor oil (Note: This differs from the 5W-20 specification used in later 3-valve engines).
- Transmission Fluid: Requires MERCON V automatic transmission fluid (Total capacity is approximately 17.0 quarts depending on the cooling loop). Do not use MERCON SP or LV in this 4R100 transmission.
- Cooling System: Requires traditional green Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant (or equivalent meeting Ford ESE-M97B44-A specifications). Total capacity is roughly 30.6 quarts.
- Spark Plug Thread Blowout: The 2004 2-valve V10 cylinder heads have very few aluminum threads holding the spark plugs in place. Over time, spark plugs can loosen and violently blow out of the cylinder head, destroying the threads. Always torque spark plugs strictly to 11–14 lb-ft without anti-seize, or use a Time-Sert Thread Repair Kit if a blowout occurs.
- Exhaust Manifold Stud Rust: Like later models, the factory steel manifold studs are highly prone to rusting, snapping off, and causing severe exhaust leaks that sound like a loud engine tick.
- 4R100 Transmission Heat: Because this is a 4-speed transmission with widely spaced gear ratios, it generates significant heat when hunting for gears on steep mountain passes. Installing an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler and a temperature gauge is highly recommended to protect the internal clutches.
- Owner’s Manual: Access the official 2004 Ford F-53 Owner’s Manual via Ford Support for factory fuse box diagrams, instrument cluster troubleshooting, and exact service intervals.
- Factory Parts Catalog: Exploded schematics and original parts verification can be cross-referenced via the FordPartsGiant 2004 F-53 Parts Directory.
