- LS & LT: The core high-volume commuter trims. Powered by a 2.2L Ecotec 4-cylinder engine producing 148 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque.
- Sport: Replaced the older SS naturally aspirated trim for 2008. Upgraded to a larger 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT), pushing out 171 horsepower.
- SS Turbocharged: The iconic performance flagship. It dropped the older 2.0L supercharged engine in favor of a new, highly tunable 2.0L Direct-Injection Twin-Scroll Turbocharged Ecotec engine. It delivers 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, transforming the vehicle into a dominant track-day sport compact.
- Standard Side-Curtain Airbags: Upgraded to standard equipment across all trim configurations to improve side-impact safety ratings.
- XM Satellite Radio: Integrated as a standard factory default feature across the entire model lineup.
- StabiliTrak: GM’s electronic stability control system became available on the 2.4L Sport trim package.
- The Ignition Switch Recall (NHTSA Campaign 14V047000): The most critical defect in the car’s history. The factory ignition switch detent plunger has insufficient mechanical force. Heavy keychains or sudden road bumps can snap the key out of the “Run” position into “Accessory.” This instantly shuts off the engine, power steering, and completely disables airbag deployment during a crash. Verify the dealer has updated the switch configuration.
- Electric Power Steering (EPS) Motor Failure: The electric motor assisting the steering rack can suddenly overheat or lose voltage connectivity. This drops the vehicle into manual-only steering on the move and triggers a “Power Steering” text alert on the dashboard.
- Plastic Fuel Feed Line Leaks: The fuel lines running near the rear wheel arch and fuel tank area are highly susceptible to corrosion and localized cracking. If you notice a distinct, persistent raw gasoline smell immediately after parking, check these lines for wet spray or fuel puddles.
- Shattering Plastic Thermostat Housings: Like many Ecotec platforms of this era, the factory cooling system utilizes a composite plastic thermostat housing that becomes brittle from thermal stress. It hairline-fractures over time, dropping coolant rapidly and causing severe engine overheating. Upgrading to an aftermarket aluminum unit permanently eliminates the risk.
