- Major redesign: The 2011 model featured an all-new chassis, a more compact frame, and a reshaped fuel tank. The new chassis shifted the engine forward and down for a more front-biased weight distribution, which improved handling and agility.
- Engine: The 1050cc engine was revised with a smoother power delivery and increased mid-range torque. Peak power was bumped to 133 hp.
- Styling: A new set of angular, cat-eye headlights replaced the classic round units. It also gained a new single-sided swingarm and lighter wheels.
- Ergonomics: The seat became narrower and slightly lower, and the rider was positioned closer to the handlebars for better control.
- Technology: Optional anti-lock brakes (ABS) were offered for the first time
- Speed Triple R introduced: The performance-focused “R” model was introduced in 2012. It featured premium components to enhance track performance.
- R-Model Upgrades: These included top-shelf Öhlins suspension (NIX30 forks and a TTX36 rear shock), Brembo monobloc calipers, and lightweight forged PVM alloy wheels.
- Standard ABS: On the R model, ABS was a standard feature, whereas it remained an option on the base model.
- Transmission: A revised gearbox on the 2011 and 2012 models addressed the clunkiness of previous versions.
- Subtle changes: The following years saw more subtle changes, with the basic platform remaining consistent. The “R” model continued to represent the highest specification.
- Heavier wheels on R model: After 2012, the lightweight PVM wheels on the Speed Triple R were replaced with heavier, cast aluminum items, with the forged wheels becoming an optional extra.
- ABS standard on later models: ABS generally became a standard feature on both the standard and R models in the later years of this generation.
- Clunky gearbox: While improved from earlier generations, the gearbox is still known to be somewhat notchy.
- Electrical gremlins: Some owners have reported issues with electrical components, including the instrument cluster, switchgear, and engine management lights. A random engine cutout between gears has also been reported by some owners, which could potentially lock the rear wheel.
- Seized single-sided swingarm eccentric: The eccentric adjuster for the single-sided swingarm can seize if not properly maintained and greased.
- Battery issues: The bike requires a strong battery, and low voltage can cause issues with starting. Using a battery charger is recommended if the bike is not ridden frequently.
- Heavy clutch: Some riders have noted the clutch is quite heavy, particularly in stop-and-go city traffic.
