- Rust: The most significant problem for NA Miatas is rust, particularly in the rocker panels and fender arches. Clogged drain holes for the convertible top cause water to accumulate, leading to rust from the inside out.
- Short-nose crankshaft (1990–1991): Early 1.6L engines had a “short-nose” crankshaft that was prone to failure. The design was updated in later years, and later 1.8L engines are not affected.
- Cooling system: The factory plastic end tanks on the radiator can become brittle and fail with age, causing coolant leaks and potential overheating.
- Clutch hydraulics: The clutch master and slave cylinders are known to fail and are often replaced together.
- Oil leaks:
Common areas for oil leaks include the rear main seal and valve cover gasket.
- Rust: Like the NA, the NB generation is susceptible to rust in the rocker panels and fender arches. Some models may also experience rust in the front frame rails.
- Engine: All NB Miatas are powered by a 1.8L engine. Early NB1 models (1999–2000) have a different cylinder head than later NB2 models (2001–2005), which gained variable valve timing.
- Ignition system:
Engine misfires can occur due to faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or vacuum leaks.
- Clutch hydraulics: Clutch slave cylinder failure is also a common issue on NB models.
- Fuel filler pipe: Some owners have reported that the fuel tank is extremely slow to fill, and the solution requires replacing the fuel tank, filler pipe, and breather pipe.
-
- Prioritize a rust-free car: Since rust is the most common issue, finding a rust-free car is the most important factor, as body repair can be very expensive.
- Inspect the soft top: Check for tears, leaks, or a cloudy plastic rear window, as a replacement can be costly.
- Check service records: A well-maintained Miata, even with high mileage, is often more reliable than a low-mileage car with a poor service history.
- Engine check: For early 1.6L NA models, verify that any potential “short-nose crank” issues have been addressed. For any engine, listen for a lifter tick, which could indicate a need for a valve lash adjustment.
- Test drive: Test the transmission, particularly the clutch, for smooth operation and signs of wear.
