- 4.2L V6: The standard engine, producing 202 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque. It is a capable workhorse for lighter tasks and offers the best fuel economy of the group.
- 4.6L Triton V8: A popular and smooth engine, delivering 231 horsepower and 293 lb-ft of torque. It provides more power than the V6 for a slight increase in fuel consumption.
- 5.4L Triton V8: The most powerful standard engine option, with 260 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. It was available on all body styles and was the only V8 option for the Lariat trim.
- 5.4L Supercharged Triton V8: Available on the high-performance SVT Lightning and Harley-Davidson editions, this engine produced up to 380 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.
- 4.2L V6: Up to 5,400 pounds.
- 4.6L V8: Up to 7,700 pounds.
- 5.4L V8: Up to 8,800 pounds.
- 5.4L Supercharged V8: Limited to 5,000 pounds due to its performance-oriented suspension.
- Regular Cab: A two-door version available with a short (6.5-foot) or long (8-foot) bed.
- SuperCab: A four-door model with rear-hinged half-doors for access to the back seats. It was available with a 6.5-foot or 8-foot bed.
- SuperCrew: Introduced for the 2001 model year, this was the first F-150 to feature four full-size, front-hinged doors. It came exclusively with a 5.5-foot bed and offered the most interior passenger room.
- SVT Lightning: Available for all three model years, this is a two-door, high-performance truck with a supercharged 5.4L V8.
- Harley-Davidson Edition: Introduced in 2000, this special edition featured a unique look and was powered by the same supercharged V8 as the Lightning in 2002 and 2003.
- King Ranch: The 2003 model offered a King Ranch edition with a luxury interior featuring leather upholstery.
- Spark plug issues: The 5.4L and 4.6L V8 engines, which use aluminum heads, are known for having only a few threads holding the spark plugs. If not handled carefully, they can strip or eject, leading to expensive repairs.
- Intake manifold gaskets: V6 and V8 engines were known to have problems with leaking intake manifold gaskets.
- Blower motor resistor: Some owners reported that the blower motor for the air conditioning and heating would only work on the highest setting. This is a common failure point that can be fixed by replacing the blower motor resistor.
- Warped brake rotors: Owners have reported that the original factory brake rotors are prone to warping, especially if the truck is frequently used for towing.
