- Hydrostatic Drive: All Z-Series models dropped mechanical drivetrains in favor of a standard hydrostatic drive transmission, allowing operators infinitely variable speed control without clutching.
- Threshing Drum: Features a massive 660 mm (26-inch) diameter primary threshing cylinder across the entire lineup.
- After-Threshing Cylinder: Positioned directly behind the main drum, John Deere integrated a unique 400 mm diameter active separation cylinder instead of relying solely on standard straw walkers, drastically accelerating grain separation before the crop hit the straw walkers.
- Hillmaster Hillside System: Parallel models could be optioned with the iconic Hillmaster lateral tilt system, which used heavy-duty hydraulic leveling cylinders to automatically tilt the entire combine body up to 11 degrees to keep the cleaning shoes level on steep slopes.
- Electrical Serial Breakdown: Note that electrical schematics diverge drastically by year. Harness configurations and wiring layout diagnostics are grouped into modules Up to Serial No. 062721 versus modified systems From Serial No. 062722.
- Tailings and Clean Grain Elevators: Check the tensioners and chain alignment on the elevators (detailed under Section 130). Worn chains on the tailings elevator easily plug when running green-stemmed crops or wet straw.
- Hydrostatic Bleeding: When replacing drive lines or final drive seals, the hydraulic system must be properly cycles and bled through the planetary final drives to avoid trapping air pockets that lead to premature cavitation and pump failure.
